The Ruby Red Story
It all started when Mike and Martine ditched their high-flying jobs, donned flip flops and began a life-changing journey through the parts of Asia that tourists never normally experience.
“In between chatting to Tibetan Monks and riding elephants across Nepal we discovered a culture where beauty isn’t locked up in sterile white rooms.” says Martine. ” Amazing potions and lotions are being cooked up right there on the streets. After the chemical-filled cosmetics we were used to using back home this came as a real revelation.”
So, somewhere between London and Nepal the idea behind Ruby Red took shape. Why bother with harsh chemicals when they could utilise the kind of great Organic Ingredients and traditional techniques that Asians have trusted to protect their skin for centuries?
Creating beautiful products
Once back in Blighty, we set about making the Ruby Red dream a reality. Since Martine had already carved out a successful career in the beauty industry, she was keen that Ruby Red should reflect her own passion for product.
“We spent a year researching the organic bodycare market, but were disappointed with what we found”says Martine. So, she went back-to-basics and decided to dedicate her time to learning how to mix fresh formulations from the Ruby Red workshop in North London.
The first project Martine turned her attention to was creating a moisturising bath soak with pure essential oils and a great aroma that wouldn’t dry skin. “I love baths for total relaxation, but have always found existing bath products to either be very drying on my skin or leave the bath with a slick of oil.” says Martine “We spent twelve months sourcing great Organic Ingredients, and when we got to try the finished product we knew it was worth the wait.”
Following enthusiastic feedback from friends it was only a matter of time before Ruby Red made its proud debut at a local fair and first one, then two stalls at key London markets, ahead of hitting the shelves at respected high street eco-boutiques – see our where to find us page for details. “Suddenly those long nights spent cutting out labels by hand were worth it when we saw customer’s delighted reactions to our collection.” says Martine.
What we believe in
From elegantly handmade biodegradable packaging right through to ethically-sourced 100% organic ingredients including pure essential oils inspired by aromatherapy, we continue to make sure that every recipe in the Ruby Red range works to naturally nourish, totally protect and perfectly pamper skin while also being positive for the planet.
- Handmade products – We much prefer people to machines and believe that our products feel the “love”. Can you feel it?
- Organic Ingredients – We only use Organic Ingredients from ethical suppliers who have an organic certification. We are also committed to using sustainable ingredients – What’s the use of being organic and natural if in doing so you are damaging the environment? Our ingredients are not heated during the manufacturing process, to keep them as pure as possible.
- Creating gorgeous gifts – We take great care over every part of our presentation to ensure that each Ruby Red product makes a great gift.
- No Chemicals – Chemicals who needs them? We believe if you wouldn’t eat it, you shouldn’t put it on your skin. Its all the same body. So just like it says on the tin, we don’t use artificial colours or preservatives, petroleum based ingredients, animal fats or harsh chemicals. See our Organic Ingredients list for more details.
- Not tested on animals – We only test our cosmetics on friendly people – never on animals. We are strongly against animal testing and because we only use natural products, they have all been tested for centuries by people like you.
- Beautiful packaging – We want you to love our packaging while making it bio-degradable, recyclable and from sustainable material. So, no plastic for us.
- Happy people – Let’s spread a bit of happiness! We want happy customers and happy people working for us. Group hugs all around.
